Nature reserve Ormož Basins
Nature reserve Ormož Basins the 55-hectare large wetland of anthropogenic origin, located in the area of the Drava river ecosystem near Lake Ormož, is composed of shallow pools with reed beds and stands of reeds, surrounded by floodplain forest, a rare remnant of the meandering river bend in Slovenia. The wetland is of exceptional national and international importance for numerous endangered bird species.
The Ormoške Lagoons are an important nesting site for water birds and a key stopover for migratory birds in Slovenia. Here, 29 nesting species of water birds have been recorded, including endangered and rare species. The extensive reed beds are also home to the Eurasian bittern, a species that nests only in this area in Slovenia. During migration, 30 species regularly appear, and their numbers during this period can reach tens of thousands of birds.
We manage vegetation in the natural reserve through grazing of water buffaloes, which are specially adapted to aquatic environments and are our indispensable helpers. Ormoško Lake, located in close proximity, is extremely interesting in all seasons.
The nature reserve is open to the public with organized infrastructure. Quality nature experience is provided through a learning path with observation points and a visitor center, which is also adapted for groups with special needs. The reserve also offers an educational program for young people and other groups of visitors through guided excursions.
