The oldest grapevine
With an age of more than 400 years entered in the Guinness Book of Records
The vine boasts in the oldest part of the city, on Lent, where it climbs a building that was once part of the city walls. Her story tells of resilience and extraordinary life energy, as the vine has survived in its 450s everything from Turkish sieges, numerous fires, grape aphids, to the bombing of the city.
The descendants of the Old Vine are growing all over the world, and its wine has been received as a high protocol gift from the Municipality of Maribor by celebrities such as Gari Kimovič Kasparov, Vaclav Havel, Bill Clinton, Arnold Schwarzeneger and the Dalai Lama.
The Old Vine grapes, the Žametovka or Modra kavčina varieties, are one of the oldest domesticated noble wine varieties in Slovenia.
