Maistrov Tower on Zavrh
Zavrh is a charming settlement in the very heart of the rolling Slovene Hills (Slovenske gorice), set on a ridge above the Pesnica Valley. Vineyards, orchards, and fields spread across its sunny (southern) side, while mixed forests cover the north. The area has a rich winegrowing past and belongs to one of the traditional viticultural regions where vineyard cottages once stood. The place is closely connected with the poet, general, and defender of the northern border, Rudolf Maister (1874–1934), who came to Zavrh for rest and recreation.
In 1963, the locals erected a 24-meter wooden tower in Zavrh and named it after General Rudolf Maister. Today, a 17-meter metal observation tower stands on the same site, offering, in fine weather, superb views of Pohorje, Kozjak, Boč, Donačka gora, neighboring Croatia, and even the Hungarian plains. In the middle of the settlement stands the Stupič Villa, where the general spent several holidays.
